Pop Warner football: Vikings turn back regional foes
(September 21, 2005) Vikings Pop Warner gridders continued their successful season on Sunday, September 18, against a series of regional opponents at the Menlo-Atherton High School field.
Here are details of the September 18 action:
** Mitey Mites. Accustomed to rolling over their Peninsula foes, the Vikings had to scrap hard against a well-schooled Gilroy Browns squad. The locals shut down a determined Browns running attack in the fourth quarter to maintain clear-cut domination in a non-scoring contest.
** Junior Pee Wees. Ryan Blocker stole the ball from a struggling Coastside Pirate (Half Moon Bay) running back and raced 35 yards for a touchdown to key a 19-0 Vikings victory. Quarterback Patrick Bruni scampered 11 yards for a touchdown, ran for an extra point, and plunged for a final Vikings score in the fourth quarter to ice the contest. Menlo-Atherton is developing a quick, hard-hitting defense behind Charles Washington, Landon Baty, Jake Britschgi and Keenan Gates. Defenders Chris Williams and David Lester also stepped up with outstanding efforts.
** Junior Midgets. In one of the day's most exciting contests, the Vikings edged the Gilroy Browns 18-16 behind touchdowns from Chris Gaertner, Marquise Tolson and Brandon Gibson. Gilroy's vaunted air attack threatened to confound the home team, but brothers Vince and Wes Hagman each came away with two interceptions to frustrate the visitors.
