Notebook: Menlo fundraising walk to aid Gulf state cancer centers Notebook: Menlo fundraising walk to aid Gulf state cancer centers (October 05, 2005)

Cancer treatment centers in the hurricane ravaged Gulf states will benefit from this year's "Light the Night" Leukemia & Lymphoma Society fundraising walk, to be held on Saturday, October 8, at Burgess Park in Menlo Park.

Atherton residents James and Claire McGovern, who lost their 2-year-old grandson Ben to leukemia in 1999, will lead the walk.

The McGoverns have raised $225,000 for blood cancer treatment research since then, and they are leading this year's effort to donate $1 million to rebuild treatment centers damaged by Hurricane Katrina.

Bill Walsh, the former 49ers head coach and NFL Hall of Famer, is the "Light the Night" honorary chairman.

"Blood cancer patients displaced by Hurricane Katrina are in need of acute care and cannot have their treatment interrupted. It's critical that we maintain vital treatment such as chemotherapy and radiation," said Michele Thompson, executive director of the society's Silicon Valley chapter.

Registration starts at 5 p.m. and the walk begins at 7 p.m. Anyone interested in participating can call 877-LLS-CURE or go to LighttheNight.org/ncd16 for information.

Arnold Schwarzenegger made an appearance at the Sun Microsystems campus in Menlo Park on September 28, telling employees that voters needed to "upgrade California" on November 8.

"The recall (election) was the original, this is the sequel," he said. "Now let us recall the broken system."

The forum, which is free and open to the public, will start at 7 p.m. at The Sequoias retirement community's Hanson Hall at 501 Portola Road in Portola Valley.

Speakers will explain and discuss the ballot measures.
