School Notebook: Coach Parks dedication set
(October 05, 2005) Football, wrestling and other sports fans from decades past should circle their calendars for the official dedication of Coach Parks Field at Menlo-Atherton High School on Saturday, October 15.
Dedication of the M-A football field, honoring the legendary Coach Ben Parks, will be at 1 p.m. before the varsity football team's homecoming game.
Local sports celebrities, business and civic leaders, alumni and community members will be there "to show this man how much we love and appreciate his more than 40 years of service to the community," said Marc F. Rogers, chairman.
Improv group takes Menlo School stage
The Bay Area improvisation group known as "3 for All" takes the stage at Menlo School's Florence Moore Auditorium in Atherton at 7 p.m. Friday, October 7, in a benefit for the school's drama department.
Comedians Rafe Chase, Steve Kearin and Tim Orr hit the stage with no script, no format, no preconceptions and no safety net, says Menlo School drama teacher Elizabeth Orr, a sister of group member Tim Orr.
Jim Shelby, a professional musician and drama teacher at Gunn High School, provides musical accompaniment.
"Come out for an evening of sheer hilarity and support the drama department," says Ms. Orr.
Tickets, at $10 for students and $15 for adults, will be available at the door or by calling the Menlo School bookstore at 330-2001, ext. 2535.
Deadline to apply for school board seat
The deadline to apply for a four-year appointment to the Portola Valley school board is 5 p.m. Friday, October 7.
The board vacancy will occur November 30, when Trustee Deborah Rappaport's term ends. She did not seek re-election.
Incumbents Donna Carano and Ray Villereal were the only candidates for three board seats, so there will be no district election on the November 8 ballot.
Several district residents have taken out applications for the appointment, but none has returned them, said Superintendent Anne Campbell.
The school board plans to interview candidates the week of October 17 and make the appointment at the board's October 26 meeting.
Candidates must be registered voters in the district. Application forms are available at the district office at 4575 Alpine Road in Portola Valley. For more information, call Superintendent Campbell at 851-1777, ext. 3010.
Lemonade at La Entrada
At La Entrada School, six boys -- Robert de Geus, Anthony Hernandez, Cole Eberwein, Adam Cook, and Julian and Steffan Salas -- recently built a lemonade stand on the Alameda de las Pulgas that attracted friends, family and passers-by and netted $83, all of which the boys donated to the Palo Alto office of the American Red Cross for Hurricane Katrina relief. "I feel better than getting a present!" said Robert's sister and helper Katelyn, age 6.
