Kiwanis Club gives $14,000 for relief

The Kiwanis Club of Menlo Park presented a check for $14,610 to the American Red Cross Hurricane Katrina relief fund at its September 27 meeting, when Mary Watt of the Bay Area Red Cross was the guest. The club earlier gave $35,000 to the Red Cross for tsunami disaster relief, says club member Marjorie Garfield.
Law allows county to operate homes for disturbed youth

San Mateo County will be able to continue operating group homes for emotionally disturbed young people who need care outside their homes, under a bill carried by state Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, and signed recently by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

SB 679 will allow San Mateo County to provide care in local facilities for hard-to-place youth, instead of placing them far from their homes or out of state, Sen. Simitian said.

Current law allows only private, nonprofit providers to obtain foster care funding from the state Department of Social Services. The result has been a shortage of services for particularly needy young people.

"SB679 is all about keeping kids close to their families and their communities," Sen. Simitian said. "It ensures that San Mateo County can continue to be part of the solution."
