Club develops young track athletes Club develops young track athletes (November 16, 2005)

The Faultline Track Club, organized by local parents, sends young runners -- from ages 8 to 14 -- to cross-country and track meets throughout Northern California.

The club was formed in the fall of 2004 by Bill and Sarah Rehlich of Portola Valley, Pete and Karen Stine of Woodside, and David and Carolyn Miclean of Belmont.

During the cross-country season (late September through November), the club practices on Wednesdays at various locations in Woodside. During the track season (late February through June) , the club practices on Mondays at Angell Field at Stanford University.

The two coaches, Peter Gilmore and Nate Bowen, are national marathon competitors.

Gilmore, a founder and coach of the Woodside Track Club, placed 10th in the Boston Marathon, earning him the right to complete with the U.S. team at the world championships in Helsinki in August.

Bowen was a Division II All-American at UC Davis, where he graduated in 1999. He participated in the 2004 Olympic trials, and is the course record holder of the San Francisco Chronicle Marathon, which he won in 2002.

On the club Web site, the coaches say that competitions are secondary "to the goal of fostering a love of running that hopefully each individual will carry with him or her into high-school athletics and beyond."
