Celebrating Kesey, Garcia
(November 16, 2005) A celebration of the lives and work of writer Ken Kesey and Grateful Dead icon Jerry Garcia is set for Saturday, November 19, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Menlo Park Library.
The event, organized by Skyline artist Leah Lubin, is free.
Ms. Lubin said those who knew either man, or were touched by their work, will be invited to share their stories in writing. Her son, filmmaker Daniel Raim, will videotape people wishing to speak about their experiences with Mr. Kesey or Mr. Garcia, she said.
Two works by Ms. Lubin will be on display, and will remain in the library for four months, she said. One is a collage made up of photographs Ms. Lubin took of the late author one day in 1999. He and a few other former "Merry Pranksters" had come to La Honda that day on the old school bus the Pranksters made famous when they drove it cross-country in the mid-1960s.
The other is an acrylic-on-canvas painting of Mr. Garcia, who, Ms. Lubin said, lived in Menlo Park for a time when he was growing up.
Mr. Kesey lived in Menlo Park while attending Stanford University. He moved to La Honda after publishing his novel, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," in 1962, Ms. Lubin said.
The library is at 800 Alma St. For more information, log on at leahlubin.com, or call Roberta Roth at the library, 330-2512.
