Infant drowns in patio fountain in Woodside Infant drowns in patio fountain in Woodside (November 30, 2005)

Tragedy struck at a home in the 200 block of Manzanita Way in Woodside shortly after 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 23, when a 1-year-old child apparently crawled off on his own and drowned in a fountain.

Paramedics from the Woodside Fire Protection District relieved family members in resuscitation efforts, but they were unable to revive Zane Harris, who was taken to Stanford Hospital and pronounced dead at 12:21 p.m., said Capt. Don O'Keefe of the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office in a press release.

Zane and his family were on a trip from their home in Cornelius, Oregon, and visiting Zane's great-grandmother, Capt. O'Keefe said. Zane's mother had walked out to her vehicle in advance of a trip to the store, and about five minutes later re-entered the house to discover that her son was missing.

Zane's mother and grandmother began a search, and his grandmother found him floating face down in a sunken fountain in a patio just outside the front door of the house, Capt. O'Keefe said.

The baby may have crawled out through a hole in a screen door, said Lt. Ken Jones of the Sheriff's Office.
