Atherton Councilman Charles Marsala assumed the role of mayor at the December 14 City Council meeting.

It is the first time that Mr. Marsala, who was elected to the council in 2002, has wielded the mayoral gavel. He served as vice mayor this year.

The council traditionally taps the outgoing vice mayor to serve as the town's next mayor, a largely ceremonial post. Mayors serve for one year and chair council meetings.

With Mr. Marsala leading the December 14 meeting, the City Council moved through its 22-item agenda briskly and ended more than half an hour earlier than estimated, at 9:38 p.m.

At the same meeting, the council chose Alan Carlson from its ranks to serve as vice mayor. Bill Conwell, who served as the town's 2005 mayor, was absent from the meeting due to illness.
