Peninsula Geological Society lecture on seafloor spreading
(January 04, 2006) Barbara John of the University of Wyoming will describe recent research on dating new crust of the Earth as it emerges in mid-ocean ridges at a program of the Peninsula Geological Society on Tuesday, January 10, at 7:30 p.m. at Stanford.
In her talk titled "Slow-Spreading Mid-Ocean Ridges: One Last Frontier in Plate Tectonics?" Dr. John will describe diving in a tiny submarine deep under the Indian Ocean to collect crystals of zircon from the ocean crust.
The program GeoCorner will be preceded by a reception in the Mitchell Building at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6:15. Dinner tickets are $30 for most people, and $5 for students. The lecture is free.
