Atherton council looking for new member Atherton council looking for new member (January 11, 2006)

The Atherton City Council is now accepting applications to fill the council seat left vacant by the death last month of longtime council member and former mayor Bill Conwell.

At a special meeting on January 9, the council set a January 18 deadline to apply for the seat, which expires in November. The council will review applications and interview candidates at a special meeting Saturday, January 21, at 12:30 p.m.

Mr. Conwell, 83, died in his sleep on Christmas morning after a short battle with cancer.

The council must appoint a new member or decide to call a special June election within 30 days of the death of a council member, giving the council until January 24 to act, said Mayor Charles Marsala.

The council will decide whether to appoint or let the town elect a new member based on the number and quality of the applicants, he said.

Mr. Conwell would have completed his fifth term on the council in November. Mayor Marsala and Vice Mayor Alan Carlson are also serving terms that will expire in November.

Send applications to the Town of Atherton, 91 Ashfield Road. For more information, contact Kathi Hamilton, the acting city clerk, at 752-0529.
