Community celebration honors Martin Luther King Jr.
(January 11, 2006) Several nonprofit organizations are hosting a community event honoring the legacy of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. on Saturday, January 14, in East Palo Alto.
The "Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration 2006: A Call to Conscious Action" takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Boys and Girls Clubs' Moldaw Zaffaroni Clubhouse at 2031 Pulgas Ave. in East Palo Alto.
The event, free and open to the public, is designed to examine Dr. King's work in the context of modern day civil rights issues in Bay Area communities.
The hosts are Public Allies Silicon Valley, the Redwood City Martin Luther King Celebration Committee, the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula, Community Development Institute in East Palo Alto, Opportunities Industrialization Center West (OICW) in Menlo Park, and the Redwood City Fair Community Center.
Activities include bilingual and youth-centered workshops, cultural performances, and a panel of youth and elders discussing community issues. Civil rights pioneers in East Palo Alto and Redwood City will be honored for their work.
