Las Lomitas superintendent to retire
(January 25, 2006) For the past 10 years, the Las Lomitas Elementary School District has been led by Superintendent Mary Ann Somerville, but someone else will be doing that job when the district's two schools open in September.
Ms. Somerville, soon to be 63, announced that she will retire on June 30 after a 40-year career in education. She informed the district's Board of Trustees of her intentions at the Wednesday, January 18, board meeting.
"It was a really difficult decision," Ms. Somerville told the Almanac. "I've accomplished the various things I hoped to do and I'm a woman of a certain age."
She said she has no "big plans" for her retirement and no other jobs lined up, but expects to continue with her volunteer efforts and maybe do some consulting. "But not for a while," she added. "I want to rest."
