Drama on coping with bullying Drama on coping with bullying (February 01, 2006)

Parents and young readers may find a lot to recommend in an upcoming dramatic production of "Note to 6th Grade Self," a well-received short story by Julie Orringer about a girl troubled by bullying.

The performance, sponsored by the San Mateo County library system and the Portola Valley Library, is free and begins at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, February 9, in the multi-use room at Portola Valley Town Center at 765 Portola Road.

The performance will be by the San Francisco-based Word for Word theater company, known nationally for staging short stories in which the performers speak every word the author has written.

The story is about a girl trying to cope with bullying and unpopularity at school, and consulting her older self for advice for her younger self. In the end, realizing that sixth grade is not forever, she quietly triumphs over jealousy and isolation.

For more information, call the Portola Valley Library at 851-0560.
