Talk on parenting in a 'community of abundance' Talk on parenting in a 'community of abundance' (February 01, 2006)

Author Wendy Mogel will speak on "Parenting in a Community of Abundance" on Monday, February 6, as part of the revamped Portola Valley School District Speaker Series.

Parents, teachers, and the general public are invited to the program that begins at 7 p.m. in the multi-use room at Ormondale School, 200 Shawnee Pass in Portola Valley.

Ms. Mogel wrote the book, "Blessings of a Skinned Knee," as a parent's guide to raising optimistic, compassionate and resourceful children who are not spoiled by abundance. Her book is based on her experiences as a clinical psychologist, educator, workshop leader and parent.

"Parents today find it harder than ever to uphold their own values within their families when they seem so at odds with those of current culture," she said.

"We seek security in a society that seems more and more dangerous, grace in a culture that thrives on competition, and gratitude in an age of ever-increasing materialism," said the author, who will field questions from the audience.

On Tuesday, February 7, she will meet with Ormondale parents to discuss how to translate her ideas into action for K-3 students. This discussion will be from 8:45 to 10:30 a.m. during Principal Eva Gal's "coffee chat," being held at the Holland/Yates home, 170 Mapache Drive in Portola Valley.

The speaker series also brings Michael Bradley -- author of "Yes, Your Teen is Crazy!" -- to Corte Madera School on Wednesday, February 8, from noon to 1:30 p.m. Parents are invited to pack a brown bag lunch and join Mr. Bradley and Principal Joel Willen in Room 1001 to find out "ways to love your kid without losing your mind" -- the subtitle of the book.

Mr. Bradley, a psychologist for adolescents, will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday, February 7, at Castilleja School in Palo Alto as part of the Common Ground Speaker Series.
