Ray 'Hap' Halloran talks of prisoner-of-war experience
(February 01, 2006) World War II bombardier Raymond "Hap" Halloran of Menlo Park will give a talk on Saturday, February, 4 in Foster City about his experience as a prisoner of war.
The talk will be before a luncheon meeting of the Bay Area Civilian Ex-Prisoners of War at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.
Mr. Halloran, a Menlo Park resident, was shot down over Tokyo in 1945. After abandoning his plane at 27,000 feet, he parachuted to the ground, was beaten by the civilians who found him, brutally imprisoned, and lived to tell about it and eventually reconcile with his former enemies.
The second speaker will be Terry Santos, a member of the 11th Airborne Division which spearheaded the liberation of the Los Banos Internment Camp in the Philippines while the struggle for control of that country was still being fully contested by U.S. and Japanese forces during World War II.
The meeting begins at 11 a.m. For reservations, call Marjorie Wagstaffe at 324-3086. The Crowne Plaza Hotel is located at 1221 Chess Drive in Foster City.
