Carolyn Ruddell Samuels, a former resident of Portola Valley, Woodside and Menlo Park, died Aug. 30 of injuries after being struck by a vehicle while she was running in Santa Barbara with a training group for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team in Training.

Police said the driver of the vehicle was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter, according to the Santa Barbara News-Press.

Ms. Samuels, 66, moved to Santa Barbara about two years ago.

A lifelong volunteer and world traveler, Ms. Samuels was doing what she loved: training with a group of about 35 runners for the Nike Women's Marathon next month in San Francisco, according to her family. She trained for her first marathon, at age 51, and completed more than a dozen marathons and many half-marathons, raising thousands of dollars for leukemia research and patient support.

She is survived by her children, Jane Samuels of Portland, Jeff Samuels of Girdwood, Alaska, and Jill Allen of St. Louis; three grandchildren; and a half-brother, David Ruddell of Las Vegas.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept 6, at All Saints By-The-Sea Episcopal Church in Montecito at 11 a. m. A second memorial service will be held in Portola Valley on Saturday, Oct. 4, at Christ Church.

The family requests that any donations in her honor be made to one of the two organizations that she felt most strongly about: the Children's Health Council of Palo Alto, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of America.
