PV woman suffers minor injury in shooting

By Bay City News Service

A young woman suffered a minor injury when she accidentally shot herself in the arm at her Portola Valley home Wednesday afternoon, a San Mateo County sheriff's spokesman said Thursday.

Deputies responded to the 100 block of Goya Road around 2:30 p.m. and found the woman, who claimed to have been shot by a man who she said had broken into her home.

However, investigators later determined the woman had accidentally fired the weapon herself and sustained a "grazing wound'' to her arm, Lt. Ray Lunny said.

He said the Sheriff's Office is not pursuing charges against the woman.

Let me get this straight: woman shoots self; police are called; she tells them some man dressed in black broke in and shot her; the emergency call tree is activated and everyone in the neighborhood is alerted to a man dressed in black who is armed and has shot someone; hours later (after 5:30, the phone tree call came at about 4:00), she says, "only kidding. I shot myself." The Sheriff says, "Okey dokey. See ya."

This woman must at least be made to pay the cost of the police call, and oh, $1000 bucks or so for causing a nuisance and lying to a police officer (didn't Martha Stewart go to jail for that crime?). Imagine if a neighbor or a police officer spotted some poor schmuck dressed in black who didn't respond to the "freeze" correctly; serious injury or death to that innocent may well have occurred.

I don't care if she does live on the tony Goya street, a night in the pokey and a significant fine will discourage her and anyone who hears about it from lying about such things.

Sheriff: do you duty!

I understand that she did lie and caused major complications following the shooting, but having her pay for causing a nuisance in Portola Valley? First of all Martha Stewart went to jail because she lied to a grand jury, (not a police officer) there’s a little difference between the two. It is absurd for you to consider this. Don’t you think the family is suffering enough from this happening? Why don’t you put this in your own perspective. What if someone you loved shot himself or herself? Would you want your loved one to be charged?

Lt. Ray Lunny of the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office said that the resident who shot herself will not be charged because the incident did not involve the filing of a false police report.

Things never got to the point of having the victim sign a report because the officers quickly figured out what actually happened, Lt. Lunny said.

Eddie, wow. I'm glad I just saw this now, years later, and not after it happened. It's pathetic how it seems you get so much pleasure out of cyber-bullying an 18 year old girl who was obviously experiencing an extremely difficult time. And Jimmy, Portola Valley's a small town, I think anyone could have figured that out. But thanks, just in case no one knew. Thank you to the anonymous user who said something's good to know that not everyone living in this small town is completely mindless and aggravated out of boredom.

I do not belong here, I know that. And the police were very nice and understanding considering the circumstances. It has not been easy and things have been very difficult. I am back in Portola Valley now, after several years of treatment, trying to move on with my life, but I do not think I belong here at all. Never have. Good luck to you, and thanks for being such insensitively cruel individuals in a time a several sadness.
