Sales tax from Tesla began coming in to the city near the end of the fiscal year that ended June 30, according to Finance Director Carol Augustine. The automaker opened at the site of the old Anderson Chevrolet dealership on El Camino Real in the summer of 2008.

Brilliant move Menlo Park. I bet Tesla can't wait to leave Menlo Park for a lower tax location. Never mind that all the jobs will go with them. That's okay. Menlo Park will still have a toy store, book store, camera store and a discount pharmacy. Who wants a state of the art electric vehicle business around anyway?

The city helped Tesla come to Menlo Park. The challenge is that Tesla is leasing from Stanford. The city, Tesla, Stanford have to work out something for the long term but I bet Tesla likes this area where there is a market for high-priced electric vehicles.

I'd like to know why Tesla is moving its manufacturing to LA area when Numi is shutting down their local plant putting several thousand out of work. Couldn't Tesla make a deal to take over the Numi facility?

Apparently, Menlo Genius (and I use that term loosely) is unaware of how Sales Tax paid in a given city is apportioned to the state, county and city. Oh well, this knee Jerk reaction looks pretty familiar. Death Squads anyone? Just get the hyper-radical comment out there quickly...someone'll believe it. Truth? Apparently, that's all relative.

I can get you a clean ready to drive TESLA today for just $100,000 and a warranty for 6 months.
How is it people can even discuss this electric egg beater in a time of crisis when not one person in the Silicon Valley area including Menlo Park, Woodside, Burlingame, Atherton et al, have even asked if it makes a lot of noise?
If all goes as well as it has, these electric cars (almost said chairs) will be in full production in 5 years...maybe, 4.85 if the plugs come in from China.
I just want to know how we can speak of this government backed by 500 million dollars, can pass the screening so fast when we will barely have a decent road left on which to drive them by the time the first $57000 baby comes off the assembly line...AND creating dozens of jobs in California?
Are they loud?.........nobody in Whispering Glens or Menlo Park, Atherton, Woodside, of Burlingame seem to have asked if they would be? WHY is that?......
I understand the first TESLA will be marketed as the CHRYSLER IMPERIALIST just out of pity for that former wundercar.

Tesla is in town for only a short while. With the 400 million they managed to extract from the Feds to bail them out. They would have passed into bankruptcy by now, if some really high powered people with friends who had invested badly in Tesla, had not convinced the Feds to give them a lifeline.
Anyone, who thinks they will survive in the long run is just not thinking straight. As for a revenue source, just how much in sales tax can be realized from a very low volume producer of a very expensive product.
This is supposed to be one of the plums that our business development group got for the City. Better than nothing I suppose, but hardly worth making any big deal about. Of course, the business development group made a really big deal about what was to be the GM mall. Still vacant and GM looking to sell.

Since reality check is about the only real resident of Menlo Park who has an opinion which warrants some serious thinking about this absolutely insane worry about something to be enjoyed by Grand Prix fans or just old fashioned elitists. An elitist can come from a coal mine as well as having been a former farm boy who struck oil and finds Molly Brown common.
Agreeing with R.C. and his clear thinking, I think the next best thing since all the terrible things which occured during the holiday, is to give three minutes of silence for Tiger Woods, who will not be playing in the tournament because of domestic problems.
So sad.

I don't think you can dismiss the potential upside of sales taxes on Tesla vehicles. If sales volume is low, it's because the company can't churn them out quickly enough. (Web Link
And I'm no math magician, but I would guess that sales tax on a $100,000-plus item, regardless of how many are sold per year, is not insignificant.

How many are you going to buy? Enough to send a salesman's kid through college?
Have you ever heard a hybrid engine?.......You can't.....and they do not cost enough to have your name changed legally.
I may be super rich too, but I would find it utterly obnoxious to be caught driving one of these just as we are losing teachers, hospitals, and schools and nurses. So, you like the quiet? FAR OUT.
Why not perfect them so that ordinary people can buy them and meanwhile, fix some of our bridges and highways to drive them on?
