Man killed when hit by Caltrain in Mountain View

Unidentified 'adult male' walked in front of southbound commute train at 5:24 p.m.

A southbound Caltrain fatally struck an adult male pedestrian in Mountain View late this afternoon (Thursday), disrupting service during the evening commute, Caltrain spokeswoman Christine Dunn reported.

Southbound train No. 368 struck the pedestrian just north of the San Antonio station at about 5:25 p.m. Dunn said the only thing she knew about the pedestrian was that he was an adult male. Nobody on the train was injured.

The tracks were temporarily shut down in both directions but the northbound tracks reopened at about 5:30 p.m. and trains were single-tracked through the area, Dunn said.

By 7 p.m., tracks were open in both directions and by 7:45 p.m. only minimal delays remained.

Caltrain also experienced major service disruptions earlier today when northbound train No. 101 struck an unoccupied car that had apparently been left on the tracks at Mary Avenue in Sunnyvale at about 5 a.m., Dunn said.

There were 35 passengers on that train, but no one was injured.

Both north- and southbound tracks were reopened at about 8:40 a.m.

"These incidents, including the tragic circumstances of this evening, are deeply troubling to Caltrain customers and staff and we regret the loss of life and the immense difficulties caused (to) individuals who depend upon the rail service," Caltrain spokesman Mark Simon said in a prepared statement.

Transit police are investigating this evening's crash and the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office will make the final ruling on the cause of the death, according to Caltrain.

The incident marks the second fatality involving a Caltrain this year.

The emphasis in this story seems to be primarily on the train delays!! It is a tragedy and some words of condolence should be expressed to the family members.
