M-A's perfect tennis record ends in loss

Bears and Titans advance to CCS playoffs with Menlo, Palo Alto and Sacred Heart Prep

The Menlo-Atherton boys' tennis team figured it had made school history when it wrapped up its regular season last week with a victory over host St. Francis. That gave the Bears an 18-0 dual-match record.

Menlo-Atherton, however, was back on the court Monday at Gunn to make up a previously rained out match. The Bears, however, were at less than full strength -- missing their No. 3 and 4 singles starters -- and wound up dropping a 4-3 nonleague decision.

Thus, Menlo-Atherton dropped to 18-1 while Gunn improved to 15-6. Neither team is finished, however. Both M-A and Gunn received top-8 seeds for the Central Coast Section team playoffs on Monday night and earned byes into Friday's second round.

Menlo-Atherton received the No. 8 seed and while host the winner of Los Altos and Monta Vista on Friday at 3 p.m. Gunn is the No. 6 seed and will host the Leigh-Los Gatos winner on Friday, also at 3 p.m.

Neither team, however, is expected to advance past the quarterfinals on Monday. Should Gunn will on Friday, it likely will face No. 3 Bellarmine (17-1). If Menlo-Atherton advances, it will face No. 1 Menlo (20-0) on the Knights' courts.

Menlo is in the same side of the bracket as No. 4 St. Ignatius (19-3) and No. 5 Palo Alto (13-6). The Vikings will open Friday against the Sacred Heart Prep-Carlmont winner at 3 p.m. Paly would have to beat, most likely, St. Ignatius, to get a shot at Menlo in the semifinals on May 12 at Courtside Tennis Club in Los Gatos.

In the upper bracket, No. 2 Saratoga (19-2) is favored to advance to the finals on May 14 at Courtside at 2 p.m. The Falcons are expected to meet Menlo, which has beaten Saratoga twice this season.
