Hillsborough murder suspect declares innocence

A Hillsborough man accused of shooting a longtime friend to death Tuesday night (June 15) interrupted a San Mateo County judge and his own attorney at his initial appearance in a Redwood City courtroom Friday (June 18) and declared, "I didn't murder anybody."

Bradley Kleiman, 30, was to be arraigned on a murder charge after his arrest the night of June 15 when police said he shot Christopher Calvache, of San Francisco, inside the pool house of his parents' home, where Mr. Kleiman lived.

Mr. Calvache, also 30 and a former resident of Woodside, had been visiting Mr. Kleiman at the home at 100 De Salba Road.

Police said they received a 911 call from Mr. Kleiman at 6:05 p.m. during which Mr. Kleiman told them he had shot Mr. Calvache after Mr. Calvache pulled a gun on him.

When police arrived, Mr. Calvache was pronounced dead at the scene and only one gun was found. Mr. Kleiman was arrested.

The homicide is the first in Hillsborough -- a town of just over 11,000 residents considered one of the most affluent in the country -- since 2004.

In court this afternoon, Mr. Kleiman's attorney asked to postpone the arraignment and plea entry, saying he had yet to review the police report.

"Why am I being booked here?" Mr. Kleiman, dressed in a green prisoner's uniform, asked the judge from behind a glass barrier in the courtroom.

His attorney motioned him to be silent, but Mr. Kleiman persisted.

"Why am I being booked?" he shouted.

His attorney then whispered to him that he was being booked for murder.

"I didn't murder anybody," Mr. Kleiman responded out loud.

The judge agreed to postpone arraignment and plea entry until July 13.

Mr. Kleiman was ordered held without bail at prosecutor Karen Guidotti's request.

According to Ms. Guidotti, Mr. Kleiman also has a hold for violating his parole for a 2006 incident for which he was convicted of recklessly evading a police officer and felony DUI causing injury.
