Armed men invade Menlo Park home

Two men armed with handguns invaded a home Saturday morning, July 31, in the 1200 block of San Mateo Drive in Menlo Park, police report.

One of the men held a female resident at gunpoint and ordered her to remain quiet, police said.

The other armed man took an iPhone from another female resident and then fled on foot when other residents in the house heard the commotion, said Officer Paul Phu of the Menlo Park Police Department.

No one was injured and the iPhone was the only item reported taken in the incident, which occurred at around 8:56 a.m., Officer Phu said.

One suspect was described as a Hispanic man in his 30s and approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall with a thin build. He was wearing a black beanie-type cap and dark clothing, police said.

The other suspect was described as a heavyset Hispanic man, about 28 years old, 5 feet 5 inches tall, and with a dark complexion. He was wearing blue jeans, a white long-sleeve T-shirt under a blue collared shirt, and black tennis shoes. He had short hair, a thin mustache and spoke Spanish, police said.

Officers from neighboring cities assisted in a search but the suspects were not found.

Police ask anyone with information about this incident to call Detective Jeff Vasquez at 650-330-6363, Detective Sergeant Jaime Romero at 650-330-6361, or the anonymous tip line at 650-330-6395.

Very scary! This is an up-scale area -- big lots, many trees. People don't see their neighbors houses very well. Who would have thought there would be an invasion at 9 am on a Saturday morning????

Sorry for the victims and question the need those Hispanic thieves had for an Iphone....
I DO think there will be an increase in crime as the recession continues, the border wars send LEGAL aliens back to their families in Mexico, and more than several hundred SAN MATEO COUNTY homeowners are without gardeners, house cleaners, nannies and whatever other jobs they (Hispanics) provide.
The backlash all of this Nevada turmoil is going to be negative for lazy Californians.Ultimately, I think that deals have to be struck to have both California both south and north funcitioning again.

Hey R.Gordon...What if both parties are Menlo born Hispanic Millionaires? 1 too many bigots in Menlo Park. Focus your efforts on making Mexico the 51st state so "they" can live next to you!

"Sorry for the victims and question the need those Hispanic thieves had for an Iphone...."

What does this mean? Most interesting frame you provide for such a unique comment.

Nevada? Did you mean Arizona? The state with lower crime?

"... crime in Arizona has dropped in almost every category — including property crime. FBI statistics show that Arizona’s overall crime rate dropped 12 percent last year and 23 percent between 2004 and 2008 ..."

Come on folks. Don't be so quick to judge your fellow commenters. Mr. Gordon probably meant why would the thieves not take jewelry or money rather than an iPhone which can be traced to whomever has it with the latest technology? Geeze can't we all just get along without being so uptight?
I am married to a Mexican man (3rd gen Californian) and he didn't think Mr. Gordon's comments were racist at all.
As to the crime, shocking that these thugs could be so brazen as to bust into a home in the morning like that with folks at home. We should all carry a gun. OK so what does that statement make me?

I just remember as a small child here, I believe it was Dr. Tevis ( ??) who shot an intruder in his home in Atherton. He was the town hero. I never forgot that. The intruder was armed as well with a pistol.

And since then, how many accidental shootings, and other shootings that didn't have "heroes", have there been?

So sad! Menlo Park used to be a much nicer, and safer place. We knew our neighbors, noticed unusual activities, and never locked our doors when we were home in the daytime.

Police also patrolled regularly & questioned suspicious-looking characters. Now, that's called "profiling" and isn't allowed. Too bad.

Times change and some things get worse, not better.

Ready, aim, fire ... No other way.
PS: In order to apprehend "perps" they have to be descrbed including a racia profile and any other identifying characteristics. Get real folks. There are some genuine bad people out there. We, as responsible citizens, can save the taxpayers aggravation and expense. Remember the old Western addage: "Shoot and shove". Brings new meaning to the Federal government's "Shovel Ready" program. Peace brother!

The amount of anti Mexican sentiments have increased in the past 30 years; particularly in the stereotyping of criminal activity.
It is exactly the same as how the people of Los Angeles treat the blacks who ultimately fought back after the Rodney King incident.
In Northern California, the Latinos are getting up and leaving, and returning to Mexico where many have dual citizenships and are tired of the treatment which is getting really nasty.
By mistakenly saying Nevada, it was a simple mistake being that most every state and city and street up to Oregon and as far as New Mexico has a Mexican/Spanish name since most of the land was theirs once.
If anyone thought I was being racist, it was against the Anglos of this very narrow minded and unworldly populated string of cities whose citizens approve of the actions of the ARIZONA mayor.
We need to think more like Canadians and not rednecks.

I am very happy to learn this family is safe, but I can't imagine the terror they experienced. And talk about bonehead intruders! They risked so much for an iPhone? I know that home invaders profile differently than regular residential burglars. I wonder if they originally had a different plan & then panicked or somesuch.

If these homeowners read this & don't have a dog, I urge you to consider getting one. Dogs are a financial, emotional & lifestyle investment, but they are excellent crime deterrents.

With all the negative reports being printed in the news media here are the statistics they fail to report.

The following information IS compiled from Federal Bureau of Investigation and Department of Homeland Security reports.

The numbers don't lie. And these are the official numbers.

* 83% of warrants for murder in Phoenix are for illegal aliens.

* 86% of warrants for murder in Albuquerque are for illegal aliens.

* 75% of those on the most wanted list in Los Angeles , Phoenix and Albuquerque are illegal aliens.

* 24.9% of all inmates in California detention centers are Mexican nationals

* 40.1% of all inmates in Arizona detention centers are Mexican nationals

* 48.2% of all inmates in New Mexico detention centers are Mexican nationals

* 29% (630,000) convicted illegal alien felons fill our state and Federal prisons at a cost of $1.6 billion annually

* 53% plus of all investigated burglaries reported in California, New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona and Texas are perpetrated by illegalaliens.

* 50% plus of all gang members in Los Angeles are illegal aliens

* 71% plus of all apprehended cars stolen in 2005 in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and California were stolen by Illegal aliensor "transport coyotes".

* 47% of cited/stopped drivers in California have no license, no insurance and no registration for the vehicle. Of that 47%, 92% areillegal aliens.

* 63% of cited/stopped drivers in Arizona have no license, no insurance and no registration for the vehicle. Of that 63%, 97% areillegal aliens

* 66% of cited/stopped drivers in New Mexico have no license, no insurance and no registration for the vehicle. Of that 66% 98% areillegal aliens.

* 380,000 plus "anchor babies" were born in the US to illegal alien parents in just one year, making 380,000 babies automatically US citizens (which is UN-Constitutional; illegal).

* 97.2% of all costs incurred from those illegal births were paid by the American taxpayers. That is almost ALL of them !

And remember every time another illegal runs the border breaking our laws, you are supporting all of these illegals no matter where they are now.

"The two enemies of the people are criminals and government, so let us tie the second down with the chains of the Constitution so the second will not become the legalized version of the first." - Thomas Jefferson

Those figures for Arizona are impressive.

Where you as thorough with your banking investigatory work?
Or the big time corruption with our local politicians?
No one has mentioned the three murders in San Mateo County last week.

What about the 500 million given to TESLA for the electric car?

"jackrabbit" is the kind of person with an impressive gun collection.

I looked up these stats from Jack Rabbit, and he/she is correct. I think based on these statistics, and these alone, we have to reconsider making ALL of the provisions in the new law for Arizona valid. No, I'm not a racist, I'm just a tax paying citizen that is watching very valuable dollars go toward programs and expenses that we should not have to be paying for right now. With all of these dollars, wouldn't it be nice to NOT be terminating teachers, or closing down parks etc.? I don't know why it is so hard for many Americans to understand the costs associated with illegal Americans, it is very easy math. Thanks Jack Rabbit for listing them.

Did it occur to anyone that the legal citizen robbers could have known their undocumented victims? Would shed quite a different light here. The whole thing could turn out to be a hoax.

Thanks for looking them up, on free republic.

Bet you can find them posted on other whack job sites too.

How about posting a link to those numbers where they were published by a respectable source: the FBI, since you claim that's where they are from, or some other governmental agency?

Sorry about that "paste" job, but the link also allows you to choose data from any period, any state, so jackrabbit can still work the numbers to scare us that the brown folk are out to get him. Freepers, sheesh...

And if he doesn't want to do the work, here's something form a "good ol' Murican" magazine: Time:

Web Link

"The 'Dangerous' Border: Actually One of America's Safest Places"

When U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton ruled on Wednesday that key provisions of Arizona's new anti-immigration law were unconstitutional, she could have also declared them unnecessary. That is, if the main impetus behind the controversial legislation was, as Arizona Governor Jan Brewer said when she signed it in April, "border-related violence and crime due to illegal immigration." The fact is, despite the murderous mayhem raging across the border in Mexico, the U.S. side, from San Diego to Brownsville, Texas, is one of the nation's safest corridors.

According to the FBI, the four large U.S. cities (with populations of at least 500,000) with the lowest violent crime rates — San Diego, Phoenix and the Texas cities of El Paso and Austin — are all in border states.
