Roger Reynolds bookkeeper pleads not guilty

 

Evette Christine Weiler, the former bookkeeper for Roger Reynolds nursery, pleaded not guilty on Tuesday, Aug. 3, to charges of embezzlement of more than $100,000. San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Lisa Novak presided.

Ms. Weiler, 31, came under suspicion after auditors discovered irregularities in the books of the nursery, located at 133 Encinal Ave. in Menlo Park, said Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe in a report.

Vendors also complained about not being paid and employee health insurance lapsed because premiums had not been paid, Mr. Wagstaffe said.

Auditors discovered "dozens of checks" written to a Fremont business called "When Every Penny Counts," police said. Prosecutors allege that Ms. Weiler concealed the embezzlements by transferring money from the nursery's 401K retirement plan.

A jury trial is set for Jan. 24, 2011. Ms. Weiler is out of jail on a $100,000 bond, prosecutors said.
