Cary Wiest files papers for Atherton race

Deadline to file is Wednesday, Aug. 11

Cary Wiest, a real estate appraiser and an apparently new resident of the town, filed candidate papers for the Atherton City Council race Monday (Aug. 9), joining incumbents Jerry Carlson and Jim Dobbie, and Audit Committee member Bill Widmer as candidates for the three open seats.

Mr. Wiest has not returned phone calls from The Almanac.

Mr. Wiest was a member of the San Mateo County Charter Review Committee, convened last November to review the county's charter and make recommendations to the Board of Supervisors on issues such as by-district elections and how to fill vacancies by-on the board. Mr. Wiest opposed

by-district elections.

When he was appointed to the committee late last year, he listed his residence as "unincorporated San Mateo County," San Mateo Highlands. His biography on the county website says he is a real estate appraiser and member of the county Jail Planning Advisory Committee.

Because incumbent Charles Marsala isn't running for another term, the deadline for filing papers has been extended to Wednesday, Aug. 11.

Audit Committee member Rose Hau took out candidate papers on Aug. 6, joining Planning Commissioner Phil Lively and Rail Committee member Mike McPherson as potential candidates who must return papers to City Hall before qualifying for the November ballot.

This guy has lived in Atherton for all of about six months, never attended a council meeting. Clearly Elizabeth Lewis and the unions and big real estate she represents need to find candidates -- and keep Furth around at all costs -- to prevent a rout in November.

The mysterious Weist guy is Hennig's new neighbor.
If the stealthy Rose Hau has filed papers then it is she who is intended as Elizabeth's fellow dragon lady. Weist is probably just cover.
Lewis and Hau must be figuring that Carlson is toast--poor guy probably thinks he has their votes.

westside trucker asked, "How long has he lived in Atherton?"
Why is that relevant? It is clear that the long-time residents have done a bang-up job of representing us on the Council, and keeping us out of trouble. not.

Hmmm stated "Clearly Elizabeth Lewis and the unions and big real estate she represents need to find candidates -- and keep Furth around at all costs -- to prevent a rout in November."
Have you spoken to candidate?
Do you know what he stands for?
What makes you think he is not a friend of Mayor McKeithen and Mr. Dobbie?

He's in real estate. Just like Lewis. Let him help San Mateo County. We have enough real estate influence in Atherton. Way too much actually.

Has he gone to a single council meeting?

I laughed out loud when I heard Weist was in real estate--everyone I talk to was guessing all last week that this guy would turn out to be Steve Ackley's latest plant on the council to prop up Elizabeth..
We have enough problems already...we don't need the county machine in here to cover up all attempts for transparency.
So...it's going to be a slate of Carlson, Rose Hau, and Cary Weist for status quo
vrs Dobbie, William Widmere, Mcpherson and or Lively for reform
Figure it out Atherton

I'd definitely put McPherson in the status quo column.

If Mark Church had anything to do with him, then I smell a rat. SM County Board of Stupidvisors is corrupt to the core siding with special interest and deep pockets.

Yeah Michael--I scrolled thru your link to Atherton and you are correct. I Don't really know how the filing process works-but sure hope that Atherton admin dosen't bungle how the papers get forwarded on.
I'm afraid almost nothing would surprise me at this point.
Please remember that neither Gruber, Wllkerson, nor De La Santo have ever run a town before.

Before you judge anyone running for City Council please speak with them directly. We are all smart people in this town. Don't make a fool of yourself and our town by judging before you do your home work. Call him or email him Make up your own mind. Don't be a follower be a leader. Find out what he stands for. His values and ideas are only a phone call away. Take the time to care about our town & do your homework Cary Wiest (650) 357-7122
