Store opening, office construction in Menlo Park

Yes, another chain store

Some chain stores are finding a warm welcome in Menlo Park. PETCO plans to open one of its smaller "Unleashed" neighborhood stores at 515 El Camino Real on Oct. 25.

The approximately 5,000-square-foot store will offer organic pet food and other specialty items. Spokesperson Brooke Simon said the Unleashed stores typically hire eight to nine people.

There will also be room for new businesses on the other side of town. Construction started on a two-story, 9,000-square-foot office building at 100 Middlefield Rd., to replace the Chevron station that closed down three years ago. Realtor Boyd Smith said the building should open in February.

Now let's see if Dreager's and Beltramo's speak up for the independent pet store on El Camino. Maybe another anonymous mailer is in order?

Good luck to 100 Middlefield Road. Judging from the other vacancies on Middlefield Road and down, as well as the lack of tenants for the new ECR building, it may be a tough sell.
