Menlo College erases 10-point deficit in football victory

Menlo College quarterback Cruz Castillo connected with Kenny Cavness (photo) on a 54-yard touchdown play in the final 1:30 of play Saturday to give the Oaks a startling 20-13 victory over host Southern Oregon in a nonconference football game.

The Oaks (3-1) scored 17 points in the final quarter to overcome the Raiders (2-2), who lost their starting quarterback to injury early in the contest.

Menlo's offense sputtered much of the afternoon, with 43 total yards and a 13-3 deficit all to show for the first 40 minutes.

That all suddenly changed as the Oaks amassed an additional 199 yards, two touchdowns and a field goal over the final 20 minutes.

Menlo's defense rose to the occasion as well, with Beau Bussani., Boo Molinary, Chfris Tosello and Nolan Doss each playing a big part.

Kevin Kurtz's 32-yard field goal was Menlo's lone score through three quarters. He added a 34-yard field goal seconds into the fourth quarter to cap a 12-play, 51-yard drive.

Menlo also drove 55 yards in five quick plays, culminating with Castillo's eight-yard scoring toss to Kyle Campos, tying the game at 13 with 4:58 remaining.

Cavness finished with five receptions for 94 yards. Castillo threw for 196 yards on 23-of-34 passing.
