The Menlo-Atherton Vikings teams of the Pop Warner football league played the sixth week of the season against the San Jose Saints. The games were played at Leland High School in San Jose on Oct. 10. The only exception was the Junior Midgets team, which played the Monterey Jets at Monterey Peninsula College on Oct. 9. Following are the game summaries:
Mitey Mites (8/9 year-olds): The Mitey Mites had a shutout game. They won 24-0. Darnell Ellis scored on a 40-yard pass reception from Lucas Olson. This play worked well because passing is very rare in this age group, so the defense was caught off-guard. Darnell Ellis went on to score again. Justin Sinclair topped the game off with two more touchdowns. The game was won by many stout defensive plays. Many great tackles were made during kickoffs, giving the other team bad field positioning. Among the tacklers were Tevita Moimoi, Darian Houston, and Ethan Chai.
Junior Pee Wees (10/11 year-olds): The JPWs had a stellar game, wining 27-0. The Vikings' defense prevented the opponent from scoring. Kai Winterling had a pass reception and a punt return, both for touchdowns. Blake Stenstrom put 6 more points on the board with a 60-yard dash for the end zone. Tate Tussing sealed the win with a touchdown after he caught a pass.
Pee Wees (11/12 year-olds): The Pee Wees had a 24-6 victory over the Saints. Joshua Towers had two amazing touchdowns, one for 45 yards and the other for 50 yards. Drew Coan had a 20-yard pass reception from Will Ritchey for a touchdown. Isoa Moimoi scored off a quarterback sneak. Charles Ferguson led the defense with 16 tackles. Leamanaia Brown and Nick Lockareff both had outstanding games.
Junior Midgets (12/13 year-olds): The Junior Midgets controlled the ball on the ground while using up the time on the clock. This led to a Vikings' win of 28-6. Manupo Turituri rambled for two touchdowns. David Teu accumulated over 200 rushing yards and scored two touchdowns. Jack Beasley, Stavro Papadakis, and Destinn Prince all had exceptional defensive performances.
