Vukic helps Menlo College men's soccer reverse its course

Sacred Heart Prep grad Alex Vukic has given the Menlo College men's soccer team a shot in the net. Lady Oaks' junior Amanda Torres has done the same thing for the women's soccer team.

Both players hope to continue recent success when Menlo travels to play Simpson in a Cal Pac Conference match Saturday.

Vukic leads the Oaks with five goals and 10 points. He scored the game winning goal during the second overtime of a 2-1 victory over William Jessup on Tuesday.

The Oaks (3-1-1, 3-6-2) are unbeaten in their last four games (3-0-1) after a shaky start. It doesn't get much easier, though, as Simpson (2-3, 3-6-1) looks to move up in the standings.

Torres, who attended Woodside High, also scored the game winner in Menlo's 2-1 victory over William Jessup. She has five goals, five assists and 15 points for the Oaks (3-1, 3-7-1), who have won three straight in conference play.

Freshman Christian Ruiz has yet to score a goal but she's an important part of Menlo's offensive production. She leads the team with nine assists.

Football

Menlo College (3-3) hopes to snap a two-game slide when it hosts Pacific Lutheran at noon Saturday.

The Oaks have thrived with senior running back Peyton Bell, who averages 88.2 yards a game. He's scored three touchdowns.

The Oaks have shared the quarterback job, with sophomore Cruz Castillo getting the majority of playing time. He's completed 55 percent of his passes and thrown for eight touchdowns. His favorite receiver has been sophomore Kenny Cavness, who has 20 receptions for 324 yards and five scores.

Junior defensive back Derek Bosia leads Menlo with three interceptions.

Women's volleyball

Menlo (3-2, 6-12) travels to Simpson for a 5 p.m. match Friday having won three consecutive road matches.
