SHP runs to an important 42-20 PAL Bay Division victory

The Sacred Heart Prep football team won the battle of challenges on Saturday, rallying from a 14-0 deficit to keep its PAL Bay Division football title hopes alive with a 42-20 victory over visiting King's Academy. The Gators (1-1, 5-1) gave up 356 yards to the visitors, 251 of them on the ground, but still found a way to win the very important game on Homecoming.

The Gators also had a run-oriented attack, which ground out 276 yards – 142 coming from senior Colin Terndrup on 21 carries – that ate of the clock. SHP also came up with the big plays when needed.

Terndrup provided one of them when he ripped off a 27-yard run to the King's Acadmy 27 with 6:30 left in the third quarter. Terndrup finished the drive with a three-yard touchdown run that gave the Gators a 28-20 lead. That led to a pair of unanswered TDs by SHP to close the scoring.

Sacred Heart fell behind 14-0 after one quarter before senior quarterback John Geary hooked up with Tyler McCool on an 11-yard scoring play. After SHP linebacker Matt Hardy picked off a pass with 28 seconds to play and returned it to the Knights' 15, Geary and McCool connected again – this time for a 15-yard TD that gave the Gators the lead for good at 21-20.

Sacred Heart also got a one-yard TD run by Pedro Robinson, a six-yard scoring run from Robert Ojeda (after Hunter Shaw had blocked a punt) and a 40-yard fumble return for a score by Ian Lynch.

Stanford-bound Amir Carlisle led King's with three touchdowns and 168 yards rushing.
