The Atherton City Council will meet at 1 p.m. today (Oct. 18) to discuss the appointment of a temporary city manager as the two top Town Hall managers prepare to leave their posts at the end of the week.
The meeting will begin in open session, with an oral report and public comments; the council will then meet in closed session to discuss matters pertaining to the appointment.
On Saturday (Oct. 16), the council held a special meeting to address town management issues, and continued the meeting to this afternoon. Deputy City Clerk Theresa DellaSanta said that at Saturday's meeting the council said it has identified three potential candidates to oversee Town Hall operations after Friday, City Manager Jerry Gruber's last day on the job.
Council members hope to appoint one of the candidates at the regular council meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 20, Ms. DellaSanta said.
Mr. Gruber last month announced his resignation, effective Oct. 22, and the council began a process to appoint an interim manager by early November until a permanent manager could be found. But council members were forced to act quickly with the unexpected announcement last Friday (Oct. 15) by Assistant City Manager Eileen Wilkerson that she was retiring, effective this Thursday -- one day before Mr. Gruber leaves his post.
Ms. DellaSanta said the post the council is hoping to fill this week is a "bridge position" -- a temporary manager to bridge the gap between Mr. Gruber's departure and the appointment of an interim manager next month.
The meeting will be in the council chambers at Town Center, 94 Ashfield Road.
