Tonight: Tales of a sunken galleon, discovering it that is

Sheldon Breiner, a geophysicist and resident of Portola Valley, will tell the tale of a sunken ship discovery for members of the public who show up for the free 7 p.m. presentation at the Historic Schoolhouse at 765 Portola Road in Portola Valley.

Mr. Breiner was on a team of adventurers who discovered a Philippine galleon that sunk off the west coast of Mexico around 1576. Chances are that a magnetometer was a key component of their equipment. To find out, you'll have to be there ... or read the story in The Almanac at some point in the near future.

The town's Nature and Science Committee is sponsoring the program.
