Suspect arrested in Hillsdale carjacking

An East Palo Alto man was arrested Friday in connection with a Nov. 14 San Mateo carjacking and high-speed chase that began at the Hillsdale Shopping Center, police said.

Jorge Hernandez, 18, was arrested in Redwood City without incident and was booked into San Mateo County Jail on suspicion of carjacking and felony evasion.

Almost a month ago, the victim was confronted by a man with a semi-automatic handgun in the upper parking lot above the shopping center's Sears department store, police said.

The man took off in the victim's car. The victim immediately called San Mateo police, who located the car being driven in the area of the carjacking but were unsuccessful in stopping it.

Instead, the driver entered the freeway and fled from police at speeds in excess of 100 mph. police said. Police disengaged from the pursuit "due to public safety concerns," they said.

The vehicle was later recovered abandoned. Police worked for nearly a month before several leads caused them to identify Mr. Hernandez as a suspect.

Police are reminding residents to be mindful of their surroundings and to contact police if they witness suspicious activity.

During the holiday season, police said they will continue to conduct high profile patrols of shopping areas in San Mateo "to provide the safest possible environment" for shoppers, visitors, and residents.
