They came bearing gifts, but they were not strangers: Curt and Patti Kaufman and their family have donated toys for pediatric heart patients at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital for the past five years.
On Friday (Dec. 17), Patti Kaufman and her son, Danny, brought 190 presents, ranging from Tinker Toys and Lincoln Logs to a red Radio Flyer, which will be given to patients on Christmas morning.
The Kaufmans, who live in Sacramento, know what it's like to have a family member with heart trouble. Daughter Kimberly, now 36, was diagnosed with congestive heart failure in November 2004.
The goal of their family nonprofit, Angels for Hearts Inc., is to help bring a sense of normalcy to the lives of children with heart problems.
In addition to Packard, the Kaufmans deliver gifts to Sutter Memorial in Sacramento and UC Davis Children's Hospital.
