Isabella and Ethan top baby names in 2010

Isabella and Ethan were the favorite names given girls and boys born in San Mateo County last year, according to the office of county clerk-recorder Mark Church.

Out of 2,707 girls born in the county last year, 37 were named Isabella. But the name Sophia beat Isabella if both spellings of the name are considered: Sophia and Sofia. A total of 57 new-born girls were named Sophia or Sofia. Also popular were Olivia (given to 35 baby girls) and Mia (32).

Of the 5,478 babies born in the county last year, 51.6 percent were boys.

Ethan, Jacob and Alexander were the most popular boy names, with 34, 30 and 28 babies, respectively, being so named. Daniel, Joshua and William were tied at fourth place, with 27 each.

The county reports that about half of the names that were popular last year were also popular in 2009.
