Officers responded to a report of a shooting at about 1:45 a.m. in the 1900 block of Capitol Avenue, East Palo Alto police Sgt. Jeff Liu said.

Arriving officers found a 37-year-old man suffering a single gunshot wound, Liu said.

The victim, later identified as Ernesto Valverde, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the San Mateo County coroner's office.

No suspects have been identified, and police continue to search for a motive.

The fatal shooting was East Palo Alto's first homicide of 2011.
