Fatal crash on 101 due to car race?

A man died Sunday morning (Feb. 27), and another was seriously injured, when their car overturned on southbound U.S. 101 at University Avenue, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

According to witnesses, the driver of the silver Chevy Malibu appeared to be racing a black vehicle when he lost control of the car, hit the sound wall, and crashed on the University Avenue onramp at around 2:15 a.m., CHP Officer Art Montiel said.

The driver died at the scene and the passenger, suffering from serious injuries, including possible head trauma, was taken to a hospital Montiel said.

Both men were described as Hispanic men in their early 20s.

The University Avenue onramp was closed to traffic as of 4 a.m.

Anyone with information regarding the other vehicle involved is urged to call (888) TELL-CHP.
