Firefighters suspect arson at their own property

 

Menlo Park firefighters suspect arson in a fire at one of their own properties early Friday morning (March 11), said Fire Chief Harold Schapelhouman of the Menlo Park Fire Protection District.

East Palo Alto police spotted the one-alarm fire shortly after midnight this morning at an abandoned house at 2293 Capitol Ave. in East Palo Alto, which the fire district purchased as part of a long-term plan to expand one of its fire stations, Chief Schapelhouman said.

No one was injured in the fire and the flames were under control within 20 minutes, he said. The building was vacant and scheduled to be demolished later this year.

All utilities had been shut off which led firefighters to suspect arson, he said.

The investigation into the blaze is ongoing.

The fire district covers Atherton, Menlo Park, East Palo Alto and unincorporated areas.
