Sunday: Menlo-Atherton Big Bear run

In this season of foot races, the five-kilometer Big Bear Run is open to runners and walkers of all ages and is set for 9 a.m. on Sunday, May 1, at Menlo-Atherton High School, 555 Middlefield Road in Atherton.

Race entry fees are $25 for adults and $10 for students 18 or younger, and the rates jump slightly after April 25. Proceeds go to support equipment and tournament fees for more than 50 athletics programs at M-A.

Corporate sponsors this year include DemandTec in San Mateo and Intuit in Mountain View, according to a bulletin from spokeswoman Diana Holliday announcing the event.

"The success of the fund raiser is especially important this year as state funding continues to drop, leaving the teams without adequate financial support," the bulletin said.

Registration on the day of the race begins at 7:30 a.m. at the main gym, though racers can pick up their T-shirts and race bibs on Friday, April 29, between 1:30 and 5 p.m. in the T parking lot off Ringwood Road.

The day will include awards for each of the eight age groups, music and refreshments from local businesses, including Hobee's, Jeffrey's Hamburgers and Cedro Ristorante Italiano. More than 1,000 people participated in 2010, the bulletin said.
