Sunset magazine will hold its 14th annual Celebration Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, June 4-5, on its seven-acre campus at 80 Willow Road in Menlo Park.
This year's theme is "Make it Your Own." Sunset editors, celebrity chefs, and experts on home, garden and design will share ideas in a series of showcases, tastings, and demonstrations.
"This year's theme really celebrates the 'do it yourself' spirit of living in the west," said Katie Tamony, Sunset editor-in-chief. She added that the theme reflects Sunset's goal of encouraging visitors to find their own personal style for home and garden.
The event will feature Sunset's Cargotecture house, a green living space designed by the Seattle-based Hybrid Architecture. Also referred to as the c192 Nomad, the home is made from a recycled cargo container and features a kitchen, bathroom, large glass windows, sleeping space for four people, and a Sunset-designed outdoor patio extension.
At the event, attendees will learn how to customize the relocatable dwelling with a variety of furniture, accessories, and landscaping.
"One of the key values people have living in the West is that we want to preserve this beautiful place," said Ms. Tamony. "This event allows us to bring those sustainable living ideas to life."
Seminars based on Sunset's award-winning One-Block Feast book will offer visitors tips on a variety of backyard activities, from beekeeping and tending chickens to brewing their own beer. Artisans who sell their crafts on Etsy.com will have a display of products for sale.
West coast food trucks will be parked on site for the event.
Rick Bayless, season one winner of Bravo's reality TV show Top Chef Masters, and eight other celebrity chefs will host demonstrations on a cooking stage. Local chefs will hold demonstrations at an outdoor kitchen and entertaining area, where attendees can try Chef Jeff Anderson's pizza crust topped with vegetables from Sunset's garden.
Four daily wine seminars will feature wines from Livermore Valley, Napa cabernets from Conn Creek winery, and a variety of wines from Sonoma County. Each seminar has a limited number of seats, with tickets available on-site for $10 each.
Honda, a Celebration Weekend sponsor, will give away a 2011 Honda Civic Hybrid at the event.
Visitors will also get a preview of Sunset's fall event, "Savor the Central Coast." Wineries and cheese makers will gather in the main Sunset building to showcase the Central Coast's best artisanal food products.
Sunset's Celebration Weekend will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, June 4 and 5, at 80 Willow Road in Menlo Park. There will be a free shuttle service from the Oracle parking lot at 1601 Willow Road in Menlo Park, east of U.S. 101.
Tickets at the door and online are $16 for general admission and $12 for seniors over 60. For more information, call 800-786-7375 or send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
