Special Olympics torch run starts in Menlo

By Bay City News Service

Local law enforcement officers today will escort athletes carrying the Special Olympics torch from Menlo Park to San Francisco, a police spokesman said.

At about 9 a.m., the Special Olympics Northern California torch will be carried north from the Stanford Park Hotel in Menlo Park along El Camino Real to San Francisco, San Mateo police spokesman Sgt. Dave Norris said.

The torch is expected to enter San Mateo at about 10:45 a.m. at El Camino Real and 43rd Avenue, Norris said.

The law enforcement torch run through the Peninsula is one of seven routes that Special Olympics torches and athletes will be making around Northern California to raise money and awareness for the Summer Games, which start June 24 at the University of California at Davis.

Donations to support the Special Olympics Northern California Summer Games can be made at the organization's website, www.sonc.org.
