Driver to be charged with homicide in crash

22-year-old passenger died after driver sped away from officers, police say

A 25-year-old woman who police allege was driving under the influence in East Palo Alto will be arrested on charges of evading police, drunken driving resulting in death, and homicide, following a Friday night (June 17) crash that took the life of her passenger, Acting Captain Jeff Liu said in a press release Saturday.

East Palo Alto officers said they saw a vehicle driving recklessly at Pulgas Avenue and Camellia Drive at around 10:30 p.m.

Police said that the officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the car would not yield and continued to speed in what appeared to be an attempt to evade the police.

A short chase ended when the vehicle crashed at the intersection of Pulgas Avenue and East Bayshore Road, police said.

The driver was ejected from the vehicle and hospitalized with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.

She will be arrested after she is released from the hospital, Liu said.

The passenger, a 22-year-old woman from East Palo Alto, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding the incident to call or text message police at 650-409-6792 or email to epa@tipnow.org.
