The town of Atherton announced Thursday, July 7, that Police Chief Mike Guerra is retiring.
"Mike, ever mindful of our financial situation, has generously offered to stay on for an extended period to help with some major projects as well as provide support and historical knowledge for the new Interim Chief," Interim City Manager John Danielson wrote in an email to residents.
"I will be announcing plans for an Interim Appointment in the next day or two," he wrote.
Mr. Danielson made the announcement "with mixed emotions," he said.
"Mike has been with the Town for nearly 28 years and served with honor and dedication," Mr. Danielson wrote. "His Town knowledge is second to none and his positive attitude through difficult times has been a huge support.
"I know you will all support me in thanking Mike for all he has done and wish him many years of happiness and health when he moves on to the next chapter of his career."
Chief Guerra was a lieutenant when he took over as police chief in November 2009, moving into the position vacated by Glenn Nielsen, who retired after only one year.
The Almanac will report more information about Chief Guerra's retirement as it becomes available.
