Late drive stalls in Menlo College football loss

Matt Pelesasa threw for 170 yards and a touchdown but the Menlo College football team dropped a 14-6 nonconference decision to host Pacific Lutheran on Saturday.

Pelesasa guided the 25th-ranked Oaks (5-2) from their own 20-yard line to the Lutes' 11-yard line with 16 seconds left, but a tipped pass in the end zone was intercepted to end the threat.

Pelesasa and Michael Alexander, who caught three passes for 37 yards, hooked up for Menlo's touchdown.

Robert Adan caught eight passes for 105 yards for Menlo, which lost on the road for the first time in five games.

The Oaks, which have a bye this week, had 271 total offensive yards and held Pacific Lutheran to 272 total yards, with 60 coming on the first play from scrimmage.

Sacred Heart Prep product Alex Vukic scored his fourth goal in as many games and Alex Palomarez made a terrific save in the second half as Menlo topped visiting Holy Names, 1-0, Friday to take over sole possession of first place in the Cal Pac Conference.

The Oaks (5-0, 9-3-1) travel to Simpson for a conference match on Wednesday.

Vukic scored in the 24th minute on a feed from Dylan Crist, who was given a red card 20 minutes later.

The Oaks' defense and Palomarez were up to the challenge of playing a man-down through the second half.

"We showed a lot of grit and heart," Menlo coach Mike Keller said. "It was a war out there. Both teams battled and I'm proud of our guys."

Palomarez recorded 11 saves in the match.

"The red card definitely put a lot more pressure on us," Palomarez said. "The mentality of the team was to keep our heads up, we couldn't let that get us down."
