Atherton's Director of Finance Louise Ho will retire in November, Interim City Manager John Danielson announced Thursday, Oct. 27.

"It is my decision to retire," Ms. Ho told the Almanac on Monday, Oct. 31, responding to rumors that she had been fired. "I was not fired," she said. "It is my own decision to leave after three years."

Ms. Ho, who is a certified public accountant with a master's degree in taxation, spent five years in Sausalito as finance director before coming to Atherton in October 2008. Before that she spent 16 years working in private industry.

I enjoyed working for Atherton," she said. "I enjoy a challenge." Ms. Ho said she appreciated parts of her job that others might think are stressful, such as working for council members. "They ask questions that I think challenge me intellectually, and I like it," she said.

Nov. 26 is Ms. Ho's last day, but she is leaving for vacation on Nov. 3 and returning the day before Thanksgiving. She said she will miss her colleagues a lot.

"I would like to thank the town of Atherton and the residents for allowing me the opportunity to serve the community," she said.

Ms. Ho has two adult daughters, ages 28 and 25. She grew up in Hong Kong, coming to the U.S. right after she graduated from high school. She lives in Millbrae.

Ms. Ho "is a tireless worker who has spent countless hours helping to bring our financial house in order," Mr. Danielson said in the retirement announcement. "Louise has served not only with professionalism but also the highest levels of integrity and honesty. Louise has set a new bar for all future finance directors to compare to," he said.
