Espinosa, Villeneuve help Brown men capture Ivy League water polo title

With Palo Alto native Toby Espinosa and Atherton resident Grant Villeneuve both contributing, the Brown University men's water polo team defeated Harvard, 15-5, and went on to dominate Princeton, 16-5, to claim top honors at the Ivy Championships hosted at Harvard last weekend in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Villeneuve had a goal in the title-clinching win over Princeton on Sunday and added a goal in the win over Harvard, as did Espinosa, a Menlo School grad. Villeneuve played at Sacred Heart Prep but graduated from Deerfield Prep Academy.

Palo Alto High grad Tim Wenzlau and Sacred Heart Prep grad Connor Still each scored once for nationally No. 14-ranked Princeton.

Espinosa will be one of three seniors honored on Tuesday night when prior to the Bears taking on MIT at Wheaton College.

Princeton (17-8) will host the CWPA Southern Championships this weekend.

Needing a victory to keep within one match of Yale, Princeton recorded a crucial 3-1 victory over host Harvard in Ivy League action on Saturday night in Cambridge, Mass.

Princeton claimed a tight two-point win in the opening set and used that momentum for a 25-23, 25-13, 17-25, 25-16 victory. Palo Alto High grad Hillary Ford, a senior libero, had 17 digs for the Tigers (8-2, 15-7).

Ford also had 17 digs in a 25-20, 22-25, 25-19, 25-15 loss to Dartmouth on Friday, which knocked the Tigers into second place.

Princeton will play for a share of first place this weekend when it visits Brown and Yale, needing wins in both matches to earn a co-lead with Yale.
