Top seeds for local girls in CCS volleyball

The Palo Alto girls' volleyball team, as expected, received the No. 1 seed for the Central Coast Section Division I playoffs while Menlo-Atherton received the No. 2 seed on Saturday.

Both the Vikings (30-3) and Bears (27-5) will have first-round byes and begin postseason play on Thursday at home. Paly will host the winner between No. 8 Gunn (14-18) and No. 9 Leland (13-16) at 7 p.m., while M-A will host either No. 7 San Benito (16-19) or No. 10 Monta Vista (15-16).

The semifinals will be Nov. 17 at Milpitas High with the finals set for Independence High in San Jose on Nov. 19.

Paly defeated M-A in last year's CCS final, with both teams advancing to NorCals. The Vikings went on to win the CIF Division I state title.

Sacred Heart Prep and Menlo School, who finished one-two in the West Bay Athletic League (Foothill Division) standings this season, are on a path to meet yet again after the Gators received the No. 1 seed and the Knights the No. 3 seed for the Division IV playoffs.

Both teams received byes into the second round and will open the postseason on Nov. 10. The Gators will host either No. 8 Carmel (19-12) or No. 9 Monte Vista Christian (20-5) at 7 p.m., while the Knighs (23-7) will host either WBAL rival and No. 6 Mercy-San Francisco (21-11) or No. 11 King City (16-11), also at 7 p.m.

The semifinals will be held at Menlo School on Nov. 16 with the finals set for Nov. 19 at Independence High in San Jose. Sacred Heart is the defending champion, beating the Knights in last year's semifinals.

Priory, meanwhile, may have played in the weaker WBAL Skyline Division this season, but the Panthers excelled enough to win the league and earn the No. 1 seed for the Division V playoffs. Castilleja, which plays in the WBAL Foothill Division, received the No. 2 seed.

Both teams will open quarterfinal play on Nov. 10. Priory (23-4) will host No. 8 Alma Heights (11-12) and Castilleja (17-14) will host No. 7 St. Thomas More (18-10), both at 7 p.m. The semifinals will be held at Alma Heights (Pacifica) on Nov. 17 with the finals set for Independence High in San Jose on Nov. 19.

Girls' tennis

Menlo School and Sacred Heart Prep girls' tennis te likely won't face each other in the CCS team playoffs that begin this week. Not only are the two WBAL and neighborhood rivals in opposite brackets, but both would have to eliminate the top two teams in order to reach the finals.

Menlo (18-4) received the No.4 seed on Saturday and will play in the same bracket as No. 1 Monta Vista (21-0). SHP (16-5) got the No. 7 seed and will play in the upper bracket that includes defending champ and No. 2 Saratoga (16-3), which has lost twice to Monta Vista this season.

Both Menlo and SHP received first-round byes and will open at home on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. Menlo will host either Milpitas (18-1) or Salinas (12-7) while SHP will host either WBAL foe Harker (12-4) or Santa Catalina 13-2).

The winners will advance to Friday's quarterfinals at the highest seed. SHP could face Saratoga while Menlo could host No. 5 Burlingame.
