Tonight: Dumbarton Rail meeting in Menlo Park

 

A group of transit agencies that includes San Mateo and Santa Clara Valley transportation authorities is exploring whether to reactivate a rail line between Redwood City and Union City across the Bay.

A public meeting to solicit community feedback is set for 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, in the senior center at 110 Terminal Ave. in Menlo Park.

The project includes the improvement and reconstruction of the train tracks, a new rail bridge, new train stations in Menlo Park and Newark, and rail service between Newark and Redwood City.

Last week the Menlo Park City Council voted 5-0 to put the station in the Menlo Science and Technology Park at Willow Road and Hamilton Avenue.

What amazes me is not that there are no comments, but that this topic will not go away.

It should go away. Why? Because there will be no Dumbarton Rail Project. Why not? Because a brand-new multi-billion dollar bridge would have to be built. And, that’s not going to happen.

The reason it survives is when funding surfaces for studies. Our local bureaucracies have never met a study they didn’t like. Why? It pays their salaries and keeps them off the street and out of mischief.

I can hardly wait to read about the mindless blather that’s going to emanate from this meeting.

The cost for the entire project is estimated at 595 million. The new bridge itself would only cost a fraction of that. Why don't you check the links and do some research instead of posting bogus numbers in a weak attempt at scaring people?

The cost of HSR was originally supposed to be $39 billion, but where is it now? Oh, that's right, $98 billion plus. The only bogus numbers being posted are by the folks trying to push forward another rail boondoggle.

Sorry mate,but even if the cost estimate for Dumbarton Rail were to increase 2-3x like HSR the bridge would still be under a billion, so Martin is still wrong. The Hwy 84 Dumbarton Bridge cost 70 million in 1982, or 165 million in today's dollars. The Carquinez Bridge cost 240 million in 2003. Those projects are a more useful comparison than HSR, a massive statewide endeavor.
