Wildcats trim the Oaks, 73-49, in hoops contest

Andrew Young scored 15 points but the Menlo College men's basketball team dropped a 73-49 decision to host Cal State Chico, 73-49, on Tuesday night.

ChaRunn Jones added 12 points for the Oaks (0-7), who extended their losing streak to eight games dating to last year.

Menlo hosts the Lamont Ramsey Classic on Friday and Saturday. The Oaks meet Johnson and Wales, from Colorado, on Friday at 4 p.m.

Jones hit a basket with 10:48 left in the first half to bring the Oaks within 15-11 of the Wildcats (4-0), who responded with a 19-4 run the rest of the half to give Chico a 34-15 halftime advantage.

The Wildcats also started the second half with a 13-2 run and led by as many as 32 points before Menlo rallied.

At one point early in the second half, the Oaks were 7-of-33 from the field. Young was 6-of-10 at that point while the rest of the team was 1-of-23.

Menlo finished by making 13 of its final 23 attempts to close the gap. Tim Tatum led the Oaks with nine rebounds.

The Oaks took a 3-10 record into their Cal Pac Conference season last year and finished 14-13 overall, winning 10 of 12 conference games and reaching the semifinal of the Cal Pac tournament.

Nick Appel, the younger brother of former Stanford All-American Jayne Appel, scored three points in nine minutes for Chico.
