PeeWee players with the Menlo-Atherton Vikings were filtering back to area schools this week, impressions of the unforgettable trip to the Pop Warner National Championships in Orlando, Florida,. still vivid and fresh.

The Vikings overwhelmed the Mount Hope, Rhode Island, Cowboys 30-6 on Tuesday, Dec. 6, in a Division II consolation game after dropping a 12-6 heartbreaker on Dec. 3 to the College Station, Texas, Raiders.

After the Dec. 3 struggle with College Station, the Vikings offense kicked into high gear against the Rhode Island team. Marcellus Chester raced 80 yards to score on the first Vikings scrimmage play, and Jack Devine and Keyshawn Ashford added subsequent touchdowns.

The final Vikings tally came on a 30-yard pass from Blake Stenstrom to Tate Tussing. Lucas Andrighetto kicked a pair of two-point conversions.

"It was our strongest game of the year," said Coach Steve Stenstrom, who plans to direct many of the same players next season in the Junior Midget category. The team lost only one game -- the first-round Orlando contest -- and captured the Pacific Northwest Pop Warner Pee Wee title to earn the Florida trip.

Congratulations to the Vikings! Playing for a national championship at ESPN Wide World of Sports at DisneyWorld, broadcast on ESPN3 - wow.

Heartbreaking last second loss to the Texas team on a play that started with only 6/10ths of a second left on the clock, and then a great followup victory to end a phenomenal season.

Pop Warner is the best youth football league in the area. The Vikings are the hometown favorites with players from Palo Alto, EPA, Menlo, PV, Redwood City and Woodside, playing the best of the best at the national level.

How cool is that?
