Two head for national rowing championships

Norcal Crew is sending Makayla Karr-Warner and Katie Kelly, gold medal winners in the western regional doubles rowing championship, to the U.S. national championships in Oakridge, Tennessee, the first week of June.

Makayla and Katie won their gold medal at Lake Natoma in Sacramento during this year's U.S. Rowing Regatta on May 4. The national championships are the precursor for rowers taking part in the world championships, which take place in Lithuania later this summer.

Makayla, a senior and honors student at Woodside High School, began rowing in the eighth grade. She was chosen to take part in the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston for the past two years. She will attend Boston University this September and will be rowing in the university's program.

Katie Kelly, a junior and honors student at Menlo-Atherton High School, has rowed for Norcal for three years. Katie was also chosen to row in the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston earlier this year.

"Katie and Makayla have learned first-hand the benefits of hard work and perseverance," says Coach Allison Frykman.

Ms. Frykman is executive director of Norcal Crew, which was founded 13 years ago. Located at the Port of Redwood City, Norcal Crew works with students in grades 9 through 12 in its competitive program and grade 6 through 12 in its recreational program.

The racing season runs from September to May, with the primary racing season in the spring. About 100 high school students are currently enrolled in Norcal Crew, many from the Menlo Park and Atherton area.

Norcal has alumni members rowing at Georgetown, Harvard, Stanford, UC Berkeley, Boston University, Fordham and Duke, says Norcal parent Eric Warner of Woodside.
